Aligning Tactics with Your Marketing Strategy to Win in The Search Economy

Brett discusses the power of not going all-in on one channel, but taking a holistic approach to your marketing efforts.

In π“π‘πž π’πžπšπ«πœπ‘ π„πœπ¨π§π¨π¦π², the pursuit of quick wins can be tempting, but often leads to disjointed efforts and wasted resources. This week on π“π‘πž π’πžπšπ«πœπ‘ π„πœπ¨π§π¨π¦π² podcast, David and I talked about the importance of aligning marketing tactics with an overarching strategy, highlighting SEO as a critical component, but not the sole solution.

We underscored the significance of a holistic marketing approach, one that fosters consistency across all channels and touchpoints, ensuring a seamless experience for the modern buyer. My primary takeaway from the episode is that it’s critical to have the understanding that our buyer is in control, and we need consistency across all of the channels that we show up. We can’t just go all-in on one channel like SEO without connecting the dots back to everything else we’re doing.

In π“π‘πž π’πžπšπ«πœπ‘ π„πœπ¨π§π¨π¦π² your next customers are bombarded with countless marketing messages, consistency emerges as a fundamental pillar of effective marketing. A consistent brand narrative, consistently delivered across various channels, is crucial for building trust and establishing a strong connection with your target audience.

Imagine a scenario where a potential customer encounters your brand on LinkedIn, captivated by your compelling messaging. However, upon visiting your website, the story you're telling changes, creating a dissonance that erodes their trust and compels them to seek alternatives. Consistency is what people crave, and failing to deliver it can jeopardize your chances of winning over and retaining customers.

The Customer Journey in The Search Economy

The modern buyer's journey is no longer a linear path; it's a complex web of touchpoints and interactions across multiple channels. As marketers or business owners responsible for marketing, it's essential to recognize that your customers will embark on their own exploratory journeys, investigating various sources to learn about your brand.

This reality underscores the importance of maintaining consistency across all channels, ensuring that your messaging, branding, and overall narrative remain cohesive and aligned. Whether your customers encounter you through organic search, social media, or targeted advertising, the experience should be seamless and congruent, reinforcing their trust in your brand.

I’ve been in marketing for almost 15 years and it took me a long time to understand the power of consistency. Believe me, I made a lot of mistakes along the way and am still here to talk about them. I used to be a quick wins chaser. A few years into my career I made a mistake that taught me a really important lesson that I won’t soon forget.  In a desperate attempt to spend a sudden influx of marketing budget, I resorted to a content syndication provider, promising leads in exchange for a hefty sum. I felt like a superhero. I just had to fork over a boatload of budget and the leads were going to come flooding in.

However, the reality was far from the promised outcome – a CSV file full of names, devoid of any genuine interest or knowledge of the company's offerings. This experience served as a valuable lesson, emphasizing the importance of aligning tactics with the overarching marketing strategy, rather than pursuing short-term gains at the expense of long-term growth. I realized a quick wins strategy wasn’t a good one when I had a chat with the sales director who told me to stop wasting his team’s time with terrible leads.

The result of that experience was a realization that successful marketing strategies are not built on a foundation of quick wins or disconnected tactics; they thrive on a holistic approach that aligns all activities with the overall vision and objectives. By investing in channels and initiatives that drive sustainable results and foster consistency, businesses can pave the way for long-term growth and customer loyalty.

This approach requires a strategic mindset, one that prioritizes the bigger picture and evaluates each marketing activity through the lens of its contribution to the broader strategy. It's about building a future-proof marketing strategy that resonates with your target audience and delivers a consistent, cohesive experience across all touchpoints.

In π“π‘πž π’πžπšπ«πœπ‘ π„πœπ¨π§π¨π¦π², the allure of quick wins can be seductive, but true success lies in taking a step back and evaluating the bigger picture. By aligning tactics with an overarching marketing strategy, businesses can foster consistency, build trust with their audience, and pave the way for sustainable growth.

The insights we shared in π“π‘πž π’πžπšπ«πœπ‘ π„πœπ¨π§π¨π¦π² podcast serve as a powerful reminder that SEO, while critical, is not a silver bullet; it's a part of a holistic approach that requires consistency across all channels. By embracing this mindset and investing in initiatives that reinforce your brand's narrative, you can create a seamless customer experience that resonates deeply and drives long-term success.

Quick Tip for The Search Economy

A key to unlock being a better marketer is spending more of your time on internal marketing. I’ve always thought that if you can’t get your team on board with your marketing efforts then you’re probably not going to be able to get the attention of the people you’re trying to reach.

A former CMO that I worked for called it β€œmarketing from the inside out”. The process to execute a successful internal marketing strategy isn’t an easy one, but when done effectively it can be powerful.

Your people are your most important distribution channel. The more that your people share your message, content, and ideas the stronger your position will be in π“π‘πž π’πžπšπ«πœπ‘ π„πœπ¨π§π¨π¦π².

I came across this post from Ryan Williams, Head of Marketing at ZenMaid and it caught my attention. We’ve defaulted by calling it digital marketing for so long that it might mean we should evolve the way that we describe what we do. There’s a lot of hot takes out there, but I love how Ryan leans into the importance of holistic marketing to validate his point. At minimum, it’s something that should get your wheels turning.
